Porcelain veneers – top myths debunked

Have you ever noticed that the smile of one of your favorite movie stars varies greatly from their films in the 80s to their films today? Chances are, they have porcelain veneers. Not only has the actor’s smile come a long way since the 80s, but porcelain veneers have, too. You’ve most likely heard the following myths about these veneers – and we’re here to offer the truth…

MYTH #1 – VENEERS LOOK LIKE CHICLETS (chewing gum, popular in the 80s)

Veneers used to stand out from the rest of a patient’s natural teeth. The shape, size, and level of transparency often didn’t match the surrounding teeth. Luckily, cosmetic dentistry has come a long way. At Falling Creek Dental, we take an impression of the tooth and have each tooth color and thickness matched to its surrounding teeth by the professionals who actually create the veneer.

MYTH #2 – NATURAL TEETH BECOME THIN AND STUMP-LIKE

Teeth are generally reshaped prior to application – without this reshaping, there usually isn’t room for the veneer. However, for most, the amount of reshaping is minimal.

MYTH #3 – GETTING VENEERS CAN BE PAINFUL

Patients receive a local anesthetic prior to starting the application process. Sedation is also available – patient comfort is our goal.

MYTH #4 – VENEERS ARE “JUST FOR LOOKS”

Veneers come with a variety of benefits, including the look of your smile. Porcelain veneers can add strength to your smile by taking worn down and stained teeth, susceptible to decay, back to their former glory.
