What Happens in a Tooth Filling Session and How to Know You Need One

How to Know Your Tooth Needs a Filling: Advice from a Draper Cosmetic Dentistry Expert

Cosmetic Dentist in Draper UtahA tooth filling is one way to treat a tooth with a cavity. When a Draper cosmetic dentistry practitioner like Dr. Chad Goeckeritz restores your teeth, he will first remove the decayed portion and fill up the area to restore the tooth’s normal shape and function. By sealing the spaces where bacteria can enter, the dental procedure restores your tooth to natural form and function. Before knowing the details about tooth filling, you should examine first if any of your teeth need to be filled.

How Will You Know You Need a Filling?

It is difficult to determine on your own if you need a filling. One way is to look in the mirror and search for signs of tooth decay, but this is easier said than done. In reality, only your dentist can truly tell whether your tooth needs to be filled or not. As a first step, you must visit your dentist regularly to have your teeth checked. Twice a year is recommended.

During dental checkups, dentists use a mouth mirror to examine the surfaces of your teeth. Anything that merits a closer inspection will then be checked with special instruments, such as Digital X-rays and laser cavity detection.

What Happens When You Get a Dental Filling?

To perform a tooth filling, a dentist will first apply local anesthetic to the area around the tooth that needs to be worked on. Once the area is numb, the dentist will then use a drill, an air abrasion instrument, or a laser tool to remove the decayed portion of the tooth. The instrument the dentist will use depends on the extent of the decay.

After the dentist removes all signs of decay and cleans the cavity, the filling will then be placed. The common filling materials are amalgam, composite resin, glass ionomer, cast gold, gold foil, or ceramic. Once the filling is in place, it will be given time to harden. When the filling is hard enough, the dentist will then proceed to polish it.
